Curls, Corkscrews and Kinks: A Curly Girlʼs Guide
Keeping those curls perfectly coifed is a challenge in the summer. The sunʼs hot rays rob those tresses of any moisture you hair was desperately clinging to. How do you help the hydration situation?
True moisture comes from the inside. Drink plenty of fluids; not only will it keep you from suffering from the unbearable heat but it is going to keep those precious hair follicles from wondering if you are suddenly in the sahara.
While you are chugging water down by the bottleful it is a good time to put moisturizers on your hair. It will help keep those lovely curls from looking…well dry and crispy. You arenʼt trying to start a bonfire with your head – are you? Looking for light, water based moisturizers are great for the summer months. Too heavy, then it can melt down into your scalp and onto your face. Do you get odd breakouts in the summer on the perimeter of your face? It can be your hair products that are the culprit. Natural brands are wonderful for this time – no extra ickies that will just hang around coating the strands.
Once youʼve moisturized you are going to want to seal those strands with butters or oils. I can hear you now, “Iʼm not about to make a salad on my head.” Hear me out, hair butters and oils are great for your tresses. They are good for sealing in the moisture, some favorites are mango butter, shealoe butter, almond oil, coconut oil and the always talked about argon oil. If you want something heavier to weigh down your hair, go for the butters the oils tend to be lighter. Just a little dab will do ya. They will make your curls happy, which makes you happy, which brings about world peace….not quite but it will feel that way.
