From Globes to Oscars: Nomination Predictions

In the film industry it is said that the Golden Globe Awards are the “precursor” to the Oscars. Well, for the 2011 awards season, this is going to stand true. If you look back at the movies that came out in 2010, popular films like Iron Man 2, Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Harry Potter will be overlooked by the Academy in favor for smaller indie films. Now, this is not a new concept when it comes to Oscar nominations, but 2010 was a bleak year for film. A lot of films that sounded great in concept, just failed on the big screen (The Tourist), while some films that were hoping just to break even, ended up getting praise from every critic (Black Swan, The Social Network).

The Oscar nominations will be announced bright and early on Tuesday January 25th and I expect that in the categories paid attention to by the general public, we will see the nominations look almost like a carbon copy of the Golden Globes.

Here are my predictions for the top 7 categories for the 83rd Annual Academy Awards.
