London 2012 – British Supermodels Turn Closing Ceremony into Catwalk

London 2012 Olympic Closing Ceremony Fashion Catwalk

We’ve talked a lot about how fashion played a major part in the London 2012 Olympic Games, with some of the fashion world’s best like Ralph Lauren, Stella McCartney, and Prada designing opening, closing and athletic uniforms for their nations.

Well, Great Britain turned up the fashion volume during tonight’s Closing Ceremony. During the portion that was all about celebrating iconic British musicians, David Bowie’s “Fashion” started up. To accompany the song, flat bed trucks emerged, carrying black and white billboard sized photographs of some of the most iconic (and up and coming) British supermodels including Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, and David Gandy.

Just was we thought that the Union Jack stage would act as great runway stage, the black and white images fell to reveal the actual supermodels, who then proceeded to put on a real life, mini-fashion show, right there in the middle of Olympic Stadium and the Closing Ceremony.

The runway walk started off with legends Kate Moss and Namoi Campbell (both dressed in gold Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen). They were then joined by Lily Cole (in a leaf-festooned brocade and lace knee-lengther by Erdem), Karen Elson (in a spaghetti-strap split-to-the-thigh stunner by Burberry), Lily Donaldson (in a sequinned, scoop-necked, corseted strumpet gown by Vivienne Westwood), Georgia May Jagger (in a very chic, flare-skirted gazar dress by Victoria Beckham), Jourdan Dunn (in a jersey column dress by Jonathan Saunders), Stella Tennant (in a old, silver and bronze chain-mail two piece by Christopher Kane), and finally David Gandy (in a Paul Smith suit).

This spectacular display of British fashion was styled by none other than Lucinda Chambers, Vogue magazine’s fashion director. You can see photos of the whole Closing Ceremony catwalk below.
