We had the esteemed pleasure to sit down with Mrs. Natori during her Spring/Summer 2013 presentation. Her inspiration this season was inspired by her native country of the Phillipines. She says her embroideries are “reminiscent of the parade of street dancers and all their vibrant body decorations.” A collection filled with color; young and vibrant; free and fun. Key pieces included an orange cropped leather jacket, a pineapple jacquard peasant blouse, silk pleated palazzo pants and a one shoulder printed silk dress.

Who is the Natori Girl?

There is not one Natori girl, it’s a certain attitude about how she likes to dress. It’s not an age it’s not a mindset, someone who wants to feel glamorous twenty-four hours a day. She wants to feel special. I think to me it’s a girl with self-confidence and is happy with herself. She likes to be put together at all times, at all location.

This is your first season during shoes, what inspired you to do shoes?

You know it was just a matter of time that we would be doing accessories. We have already been doing some bags and jewelry, and I just thought that it was time to really get started in footwear for this season. We really wanted to start in the Spring. It’s inspired by the Phillipines, these clogs that you just step into. It was a fun way to start it, and the happy colors made it a good time to launch.

It’s very different than previous collections, what made you have more “fun” this season?

Like anything else it evolves. This is our fourth season, and I think you just get more confidence and more daring. It’s about what’s true to you. I felt the confidence to express it the way I felt. Thirty-five years ago we started with this top, but for spring you can be much more flamboyant. In the fall, it’s all so serious. For fall, we’ll be continuing on for fall, the richness. We’re able to be more free.

What can we expect from you in the future?

Oh my goodness! We have a ways to go. We’re the new kids on the block in the fashion world. We’re just excited to reach and dress more people. Honestly, I think to be able to give the sensibility of Natori from day-to-night in all outfits, is very exciting. Reaching out to more women out there, to dress Josie Natori.
