Review: Pitch Perfect

Select U.S. cities got a treat this weekend, an early limited release of the new comedy Pitch Perfect. Starring Oscar nominated actress Anna Kendrick (Twilight Saga, Up In The Air), Skylar Astin (best known for starring in the Tony Award winning Best Musical Spring Awakening), and Rebel Wilson (Bridesmaids).

Now for those who are thinking this is just an hour and a half movie version of Glee you are dead wrong. Not only does Pitch Perfect star the uber talented Anna Kendrick, but the amazingly funny Rebel Wilson is the stand-out star in this film. While the cast brings it as far as singing talent is concerned, it is Wilson and her onscreen brillance that take this movie from just another singing movie to a great fall comedy. Newcomer Skylar Astin, who if you ever saw him on Broadways as part of Spring Awakening (yes, opposite Lea Michele) will know this boy can sing, but he also is great in the male lead playing against Kendrick’s closed-off ‘Beca’.

We were also pleasantly surprised by the soundtrack. All the songs performed in Pitch Perfect are done a-cappella, while the stand alone songs are great, the mash-ups and remixes are what got the crowd going at the screen we attended. The three stand-out mixes are a brillant mash-up of Bruno Mars “Just the Way You Are”/Nelly’s “Just A Dream” sung by the Barden Bella’s; Cee Lo Green’s “Bright Lights, Bigger City”/”Magic” sung by the all male Treblemakers; and the Bella’s mash-ups of “Price Tag / Don’t You (Forget About Me) / Give Me Everything / Just the Way You Are / Party In the U.S.A. / Turn the Beat Around”.

Elizabeth Banks, who also serves as a producer for the film, has a small role as a announcer for the singing competitions, be sure to pay attention to her one-liners, some of them are hi-lar-ious.

Pitch Perfect also stars Anna Camp, Brittany Snow, Ben Platt, Alexis Knapp, Ester Dean, Hana Mae Lee, and Utkarsh Ambudkar. Right now Pitch Perfect is in limited release but will open nationwide on October 5, 2012. The soundtrack is available now on both iTunes and, you can also get a first look in the clip below as Beca and the rest of the Barden Bellas sing the mash-up of “Just the Way You Are”/ “Just A Dream”.
